It occurred to me recently, while writing a book on AI, that it is greatly misunderstood. So many people I talk to and observe appear to be using AI as an enhanced search engine. It’s nothing of the sort.
AI’s role is not to simply retrieve information in a factual manner. It’s role is to generate wonderfully conversational responses. Convincing responses indeed, but not necessarily factual.
That is not to say, when used properly, AI won’t give proper answers, but since its role is to generate responses, it will often fill in the blanks with what ever sounds great, factual or not.
It is up to us to use AI as it’s intended to be used, to set the guardrails, provide the context and when important, insist on accuracy over cleverness.
